Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for October 2012 were about 8.1 million metric tons (Mt), according to the latest USGS Mineral Industry Survey. This was almost 10 percent greater than shipments in October 2011. Shipments for the year through October were 67.6 Mt, up by about 10 percent.
The leading producing states in October were Texas, Missouri, California, Michigan and Alabama, in descending order. The leading consuming states were Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio, in descending order, and received about 36 percent of the October total shipments. Clinker production totaled about 6.4 Mt in October, about 12 percent more than output in October 2011. Production for the year through October was 56.3 Mt, up by about 9 percent.
The leading clinker-producing states in October were Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama, in descending order. Masonry cement shipments in October of about 187,000 metric tons (t) were nearly 16 percent higher than those of October 2011. Shipments for the year through October were 1.65 Mt, up by about 6 percent. The leading consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia and North Carolina; these received 53 percent of October’s total shipments.
October 2012 imports of cement and clinker of about 635,000 t were 9 percent less than those in October 2011. Imports for the year through October were 5.87 Mt, up by about 8 percent.
