Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in September 2013 were 7.9 million metric tons (Mt), up by 14 percent from the level in September 2012, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Surveys. Shipments for the year through September were 61.6 Mt, up by about 4 percent.
The leading portland cement producing states in September were Missouri, Texas, California, Michigan and Florida, in descending order and these accounted for about 43 percent of the total shipments for the month. The leading consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio, in descending order) received about 35 percent of the September total shipments.
Clinker production totaled about 6.4 Mt in September, up by 6 percent from the output in September 2012. Production for the year through September was 51.6 Mt, up by 3 percent. The leading clinker-producing States in September were Missouri, Texas, California, Alabama and Florida.
Masonry cement shipments in September of about 187,000 metric tons (t) were up by about 18 percent from those of September 2012. Shipments for the year through September were 1.57 Mt, up by 7 percent. The leading masonry cement consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Tennessee, and these received about 48 percent of September’s total shipments.
Preliminary results for October show total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico to be about 8.7 Mt, and shipments for the year through October at 70.3 Mt. Clinker production is estimated at 6.6 Mt, and production for the year through October at 58.2 Mt.
