Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2017 were about 8.8 million metric tons (Mt), up by 8.2 percent from sales in May 2016, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in May 2017 were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Michigan, in descending order, and these accounted for 42 percent of the month’s total sales.
The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and New York, in descending order) received about 40 percent of the May shipments. Shipments for the year through May were 35.4 Mt, up by about 2 percent from those in the same period in 2016.
Clinker production totaled 7.1 Mt in May 2017, up slightly from the output in May 2016. The leading clinker-producing states in May were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania, and these states accounted for 49 percent for the month’s total production. Clinker production for the year through May totaled 29.0 Mt, down slightly from that of the same period in 2016.
Masonry cement shipments of about 216,000 metric tons (t) in May 2017 were up by 7.8 percent from those in May 2016. The leading masonry-cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these received 55 percent of May’s shipments. Masonry cement shipments for the year through May were 996,000 t, up by 2.7 percent from those of the same period in 2016.
