Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2020 were 8.7 million metric tons (Mt), a decrease of 6.3% from shipments in May 2019, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through May totaled 37.8 Mt, a slight increase from those for the same period in 2019.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in May 2020 were, in descending order, Missouri, California, Texas, Florida and Michigan, these states accounted for 42% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio) received 39% of May shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled 194,000 metric tons (t) in May 2020, a decrease of 13% from those in May 2019. Shipments for the year through May totaled 944,000 t, a decrease of 4.9% from those for the same period in 2019. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in May 2020 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 57% of May shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 6.8 Mt in May 2020, a decrease of 5.4% from production in May 2019. Production for the year through May totaled 29.9 Mt, an increase of 3.2% from the same period in 2019. The leading clinker-producing states in May 2020 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama.
