Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2020 were 9.6 million metric tons (Mt), a 7% decrease from shipments in August 2019, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through August totaled 67.4 Mt, a slight increase from those for the same period in 2019.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August 2020 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 41% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois) received 37% of August shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled 207,000 metric tons in August, a 5% decrease from those in August 2019. Shipments for the year through August totaled 1.6 Mt, a 2% decrease from the prior-year period. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in August 2020 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Tennessee and North Carolina; these states received 55% of August shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 7.1 Mt in August, a decrease of 3% from production in August 2019. Production for the year through August totaled 50.7 Mt, essentially unchanged from those for the same period in 2019. The leading clinker-producing states in August were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
