USGS Reports Cement Production Decrease

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that Portland (including blended) cement consumption decreased by 6% in the second quarter of 2024 compared with that of the second quarter of 2023. Consumption in the first six months of 2024 decreased by 6% compared with that of the same period of 2023.

This information was obtained from the USGS monthly survey of U.S. cement producers.

An estimated 644 million metric tons (Mt) of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2024, a decrease of 6% compared with that in the second quarter of 2023, according to Jason Christopher Willett, commodity specialist.

The five leading states in descending order of production for consumption were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Michigan. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2024 was 86 Mt, a decrease of 7% compared with that in the second quarter of 2023.

The estimated total production for consumption of construction aggregates in the first six months of 2024 decreased by 5% compared with that in the same period of 2023. Production for consumption in the first six months of 2024 decreased compared with that in 2023 in 31 of the 42 states for which estimates were made.

The five leading states in descending order of production for consumption in the first six months of 2024 were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Missouri. Their combined production for consumption was 333 Mt, a decrease of 6% compared with that in the first six months of 2023.

An estimated 404 Mt of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2024, a decrease of 5% compared with that in the second quarter of 2023. Production for consumption in the first six months of 2024 decreased by 5% compared with that in the same period of 2023.

The five leading states in descending order of production for consumption were Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Ohio. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2024 was 33 Mt, a decrease of 9% compared with that in the second quarter of 2023.

The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the second quarter of 2024 was 241 Mt, a decrease of 7% compared with that in the second quarter of 2023. Production for consumption in the first six months of 2024 decreased by 6% compared with that in the same period of 2023.

The five leading states in descending order of production for consumption were California, Texas, Michigan, Arizona and Minnesota. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2024 was 83.6 Mt, a decrease of 10% compared with that in the second quarter of 2023.
