Smart EPD published Part B Product Category Rules (PCR) for Cements for Construction, a significant update to the standard used to develop environmental product declarations (EPDs) for cement products across North America.
The American Cement Association (ACA) sponsored the latest development. Version 4 reflects a step forward in transparency, consistency and readiness for emissions accounting in cement production, according to Smart EPD. It now includes non-clinker based cements; adds a new system boundary diagram and integrates carbon capture, utilization and storage; prohibits manufacturer-average EPDs; and supports machine-readability.
“ACA is thrilled that the new Cement PCR for North America, which advances the environmental reporting of cements for construction, has been published,” the association shared in a LinkedIn post. “Thank you to the hard work of all committee members, which included both ACA members and staff, as well as other representatives from the cement and concrete industry and LCA experts. We are proud to see the outcome of our shared commitment to advancing environmental transparency in the cement industry.”
