WorkSafeBC Fines Amrize Richmond Plant

WorkSafeBC fined Amrize (formerly Lafarge Canada) nearly $675,000 after a worker was killed at its Richmond cement plant in British Columbia, reported the Vancouver Sun.

The facility was investigated after debris from a fan fell and fatally struck a worker on Nov. 19, 2020, just months after the fan had been repaired.

“WorkSafeBC’s investigation determined that the fan’s impeller had been repaired and refurbished about five months prior to the incident,” read the penalty summary. “The firm failed to ensure the installation, inspection, testing and repair of its equipment was done as specified by the manufacturer or a professional engineer.”

“In addition, the firm failed to ensure the health and safety of all workers at its workplace, and failed to provide workers with the information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety,” according to the WorkSafeBC summary.

The penalty, issued by WorkSafeBC, was handed down late last month and orders the Richmond plant to pay $674,445.93 in fines for the 2020 accident.
