Maine’s congressional delegation said federal officials should ensure that reports of unfair subsidies involving Quebec-based McInnis Cement will not harm businesses in their state, reported CTV News.
Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Angus King (I-Maine) and Reps. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) and Bruce Poliquin (R-Maine) requested that acting U.S. Trade Representative Maria Pagan look into reports of loans and equities valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars going from the Quebec government to McInnis Cement. The company’s Port-Daniel–Gascons plant will provide high-quality cement to North America’s eastern seaboard, and the legislators are concerned that will negatively impact Maine’s cement industry and workforce.
The legislators said a review of trade rules is in order.
