Hawaiian Cement is relocating its current shipment facility along Pier 2 at Kahului Harbor in Maui, Hawaii to a proposed site 600 ft. northeast in order to improve harbor operations, reported The Maui News.
The new $6.5 million facility, which is estimated take a year to build, will include two 90-ft. silos and a 1,750-sq.-ft. warehouse, including truck loading area and equipment and bagging rooms, according to the project’s draft environmental assessment. Two underground pipelines will be built connecting the new silos to Pier 3.
The new silos will nearly double capacity to 6,000 tons from the current 3,200-ton capacity. The draft environmental assessment notes that there have been cement shortages on the island during large construction jobs and that the larger capacity will allow Hawaiian Cement to meet demand.
The project will need to obtain a special management area permit, shoreline setback approval and a shoreline setback variance for the underground pipeline.
The deadline for comments for the draft environmental assessment for the project is July 8.
