Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico were about 6.5 million mt in May 2011, according to the USGS. This was 2.5 percent higher compared with shipments for May 2010. Total shipments for the year through May were approximately 24.8 million mt, about 1.0 percent lower than the same period in 2010.
Clinker production totaled 5.8 million mt in May 2011, about 1.0 percent below higher than the output in May 2010. Production for the year through May was 22.7 million mt, slightly lower than that for the same period in 2010. Masonry cement shipments of about 164,000 mt for May 2011 were almost 8.0 percent lower compared with shipments in May 2010. Shipments for the year through May were 712,000 mt, down by about 9.0 percent from those through May 2010.
May 2011 imports of cement and clinker of about 604,000 mt were down nearly 10 percent from those in May 2010. Imports for the year so far totaled 2.1 million mt, down neraly 7.0 percent from those through May 2010.
