Cemex announced recently that it has invested more than US$175 million, adjusted its production process and installed equipment to prepare, handle, and feed alternative fuels into its cement kilns. In 2011, Cemex achieved approximately a 25 percent alternative fuel substitution rate in its cement production, the highest rate among its global peers. The alternative fuel strategy has helped the company avoid the use of close to 2 million tons of coal and the emission of 1.8 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The substitution of fossil fuels with alternative fuels results in numerous benefits, such as:
- Reduces GHG emissions;
- Saves fossil fuels for the future;
- Reduces need for landfill;
- Recovers energy from waste; and
- Decreases energy costs
Cemex has set a target of a 35 percent alternative fuel substitution rate in cement production by 2015, and it seems on track to make it happen.
