Chile-based utility company E-CL and Cementos Bío Bío’s Antofagasta plant have signed a contract for a new fly ash project.
The agreement comes after a long process of development and testing by both companies. The fly ash that is captured by filters from the central generating units at E-CL’s Térmica Andina (CTA) and Térmica Hornitos (CTH) in Mejillones, Chile, will be used to replace natural pozzolan in cement produced at the Antofagasta plant.
Cementos Bío Bío expects to consume 70 percent of the daily production of fly ash from the CTA and CTH generating units. According to Carlos Ferruz, manager of Generation and Sites at E-CL, prior to this new initiative the fly ash was taken to an authorized landfill or ash pit, but now it will be reused and provide a real contribution to the environmental sustainability policies of both companies.
