Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2014 were 8.1 million metric tons (Mt), up by about 6 percent from the level in May 2013, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through May were 31.2 Mt, up by about 6 percent from the same period in 2013.
The leading portland cement-producing states in May were Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan, in descending order, and these accounted for about 44 percent of the total output. The leading consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received about 37 percent of the May total shipments.
Clinker production totaled 7.14 Mt in May 2014, up by 6 percent from the output in May 2013. Production for the year through May totaled 27.20 Mt, up by about 4 percent. The leading clinker-producing states in May were Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Pennsylvania, in descending order, and these accounted for about 47 percent of total output for the month.
Masonry cement shipments in May 2014 of about 206,000 metric tons (t) were up by nearly 4 percent from those of May 2013. Shipments for the year through May totaled 870,000 t, up by about 6 percent. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received about 50 percent of May’s total shipments.
