Cement Totals—May 2012

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico were almost 7.5 million mt in May 2012, according to the USGS. This was 15.9 percent higher compared with shipments for May 2011. Shipments for the year through May were 29.4 million mt, up about 18 percent for the same period in 2011.

Clinker production totaled 6.3 million mt in May 2012, almost 9.0 percent higher than the output in May 2011. Production for the year through May was 25.4 million mt, up almost 12 percent. Masonry cement shipments of about 179,000 mt for May were almost 9.0 percent higher compared with shipments in May 2011. Shipments for the year through May were 768,000 mt, up by 8.0 percent.

May 2012 imports of cement and clinker of about 720,000 mt were 19 percent higher than May 2011. Imports for the year through May were 2.4 million mt, up almost 13 percent.
