Cement Shipments Continue Slow-Paced Climb

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in July 2015 were about 9.3 million metric tons (Mt), up slightly from the level in July 2014, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through July totaled 50.0 Mt, up by 3.4 percent from the same period in 2014.

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in July were Texas, California, Missouri, Michigan and Alabama, in descending order. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received about 37 percent of the July shipments.

Clinker production totaled 7.0 Mt in July 2015, down by about 3.0 percent from the output in July 2014. Production for the year through July was 42.3 Mt, up by 3.4 percent from the same period in 2014. The leading clinker-producing states in July were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.

Masonry cement shipments in July 2015 of about 219,000 metric tons (t) were up slightly from those of July 2014. Shipments for the year through July were 1.3 Mt, up slightly from the same period in 2014. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received almost 52 percent of July’s shipments.’

According to preliminary data, portland and blended cement shipments in August were about 9.1 Mt, while masonry cement shipments were 210,090 t.
