Ash Grove Announces Intern Scholarship Recipients

Ash Grove Cement Co. announced that Baili Connors and Brandon Bell were selected to receive its annual intern scholarship. Connors interned at the company’s Overland Park, Kan., technical center and is studying chemistry, math and statistics at Montana Tech. Bell interned for Ash Grove at its Chanute, Kan., cement plant and is studying industrial engineering at Kansas State University.

The annual $1,500 scholarship was established in 2007 to recognize students who successfully completed a summer internship with Ash Grove or one of its subsidiaries, and who have a strong interest in pursuing a career in the cement industry.

“I am always impressed by the interns’ strong work ethic and desire to learn. Student projects not only contribute to the company, but also provide for professional growth of the students,” said Dave Ezell, vice president of human resources, Ash Grove Cement Co.

“The experience I have gained through this opportunity has piqued my curiosity, opening my eyes to the cement world and the chemistry that supports it,” Connors said. “From my experience as an intern, I see that the cement industry provides interesting and new challenges every day, so it is an ideal environment for me, since I plan to get to get degrees in chemistry, mathematics and statistics. I can absolutely envision myself working in the cement industry in the future.”

Bell commented, “I am grateful for the opportunity to be considered and honored to receive this scholarship. After a summer of experience with Ash Grove, I’ve grown to understand the cement industry and what it has to offer. Cement is the backbone of infrastructure and is one of the basic elements for setting up economic development within all communities.”
