Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2021 were an estimated 10.1 million metric tons (Mt), a 4.9% increase from shipments in August 2020, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 70.1 Mt, a 4.1% increase from those for the same period in 2020.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August 2021 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 40% of cement origins. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois) received 38% of August shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 212,000 metric tons in August 2021, a 2.8% increase from those in August 2020. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 1.6 Mt, essentially unchanged from those for the same period in 2020. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in August 2021 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 61% of August shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 7.3 Mt in August 2021, a 3.6% increase from production in August 2020. Production for the year through August totaled an estimated 50.9 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same period in 2020. The leading clinker-producing states in August 2021 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
