MSHA Reports CalPortland Fatality

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported that on Jan. 17 a miner was fatally injured at the CalPortland Mojave Plant and Quarry in Kern County, Calif., when his personal car collided with a customer truck while traveling toward each other on an icy mine access road.

This is the second fatality reported in 2023, and the first classified as “Powered Haulage.”

MSHA recommends the following best practices to avoid a similar accident:

  • Clear roadways of ice and snow or require traction devices to assure safe operation of mobile equipment.
  • Alert drivers to reduce speed on wet or icy roads.
  • Maintain control of equipment while it is in operation.
