April Cement Shipments Increase Nearly 6% 

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in April were an estimated 9.23 million metric tons (Mt), a 5.9% increase from shipments in April 2023, according to the most recent USGS Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through April totaled an estimated 30.6 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2023. 

Of total blended tonnage reported in 2024 year-to-date, 16.0 Mt (97%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in April 2024 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Arizona, in descending order) received 42.9% of April shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 202,000 metric tons (t) in April, a 5.4% increase from those in April 2023. Shipments for the year through April totaled an estimated 732,000 t, a decrease of 5.9% from those for the same period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in April 2024 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and California; these states received 63.3% of April shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.50 Mt in April, a 6.5% decrease from production in April 2023. Production for the year through April totaled an estimated 20.7 Mt, a 6.1% decrease from the same period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing States in April 2024 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
