May Cement Shipments Slip 8.2%

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2024 were an estimated 9.56 million metric tons (Mt), an 8.2% decrease from shipments in May 2023, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 40.1 Mt, a 3.5% decrease from those in the same time period in 2023. 

Of total blended tonnage reported year-to-date in 2024, 21.1 Mt (97%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in May were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia, in descending order) received 39.0% of May shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 203,000 metric tons (t) in May, a 7.2% decrease from those in May 2023. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 935,000 t, a decrease of 6.1% from those in the same time period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in May were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 61.0% of May shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.44 Mt in May 2024, an 11.9% decrease from production in May 2023. Production for the year through May totaled an estimated 27.2 Mt, a 7.6% decrease from that in the same time period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing states in May 2024 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama.
