Buying House Cement is constructing an $8 million distribution center in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in response to a building boom in the western portion of the country, reported the Jamaica Observer.
For the past 16 years, the company has been importing cement to meet 10% demand from the Domicem cement plant in the Dominican Republic.
“We have invested in a modern distribution center because we have seen that the market and the demand for cement will grow in the years to come because the country is positioned for growth and we are seeing that there are a lot of major projects either started or we expect to start,” Mark Hart, chairman of Cargo House Handlers, told the newspaper. Cargo House has a 30% interest in Buying House.
Hart also noted that Buying House will lease the distribution center and that the company will seek to increase its quota in line with the country’s demand for cement.
Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Oral Heaven looks forward to the positive impact the new center will have on the community. “There will be employment opportunities for people who will be working in the center; for truck drivers. A whole lot of opportunities stemming from it and so we welcome that,” he said.
