Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in November 2023 were an estimated 8.7 million metric tons (Mt), a 2.6% increase from revised shipments in November 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey.
Of total blended tonnage reported in November 2023, 4.8 Mt (99%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). Shipments for the year through November totaled an estimated 99.5 Mt, a slight decrease from those in the same period in 2022.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in November were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia, in descending order) received 38.3% of November shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 179,000 metric tons in November 2023, a 7.1% decrease from those in the prior-year period but a slight decrease from the five-year average in November (2018–22). Shipments for the year through November totaled an estimated 2.2 Mt, a 5.6% decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in November 2023 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 60.9% of November shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.7 Mt in November 2023, a 3.9% decrease from production in November 2022. Production for the year through November totaled an estimated 69.8 Mt, a 4.3% decrease from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states in November were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
