Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in July 2024 were an estimated 9.29 million metric tons (Mt), a 2.9% decrease from shipments in July 2023, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey.
Shipments for the year through July totaled an estimated 58.6 Mt, a 5.2% decrease from those in the same time period in 2023. Of total blended tonnage reported year-to-date in 2024, 32.0 Mt (97%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in July were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 38.6% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received 38.5% of July shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 197,000 metric tons in July, a 3.2% increase from those in the prior-year period. Shipments for the year through July totaled an estimated 1.31 Mt, a decrease of 6.6% from those in the same time period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in July 2024 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, California and Georgia; these states received 60.5% of July shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.63 Mt in July, a 2.9% decrease from production in July 2023. Production for the year through July totaled an estimated 40.2 Mt, a 5.5% decrease from that in the same time period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing states in July were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama.
