Cement Shipments Drop in July

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in July 2020 were 9.9 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decrease from shipments in July 2019, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through July totaled 57.8 Mt, an increase of 2% from those for the same period in 2019. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in July 2020 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 41% of cement produced. 

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and New York) received 37% of July shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled 225,000 metric tons in July 2020, essentially unchanged from those in July 2019. Shipments for the year through July totaled 1.4 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2019. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in July 2020 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Tennessee; these states received 55% of July shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 6.9 Mt in July 2020, a decrease of 9% from production in July 2019. Production for the year through July totaled 43.6 Mt, essentially unchanged from those for the same period in 2019. The leading clinker-producing states in July 2020 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania; these states accounted for 47% of July clinker production.
