Cement Shipments Rise in December, Full Year 2020

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2020 were 7.5 million metric tons (Mt), a 13% increase from shipments in December 2019, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through December totaled 103 Mt, a slight increase from those for the same period in 2019. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in December 2020 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Arizona) received 44% of December shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled 181,000 metric tons in December 2020, a 10% increase from those in December 2019. Shipments for the year through December totaled 2.4 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2019. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in December 2020 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 60% of December shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 7.2 Mt in December 2020, a 10% increase from production in December 2019. Production for the year through December totaled 79.1 Mt, essentially unchanged from that for the same period in 2019. The leading clinker-producing states in December 2020 were, in descending order, California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
