Cement Shipments Jump 16% in March

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in March 2021 were an estimated 9.0 million metric tons (Mt), a 16% increase from shipments in March 2020, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 21.4 Mt, a slight increase from those for the same period in 2020. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in March 2021 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Arizona) received 45% of March shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 222,000 metric tons (t) in March 2021, a 9.6% increase from those in March 2020. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 549,000 t, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2020. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in March 2021 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 57% of March shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.8 Mt in March 2021, a 4.1% decrease from production in March 2020. Production for the year through March totaled an estimated 16.0 Mt, a decrease of 3.9% from the same period in 2020. The leading clinker-producing states in March 2021 were, in descending order, California, Texas, Florida, Missouri and Alabama.
