Cement Shipments Jump 19% in February

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in February 2022 were an estimated 6.8 million metric tons (Mt), a 19% increase from shipments in February 2021, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through February totaled an estimated 13.4 Mt, an increase of 7.9% from those for the same period in 2021. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in February 2022 were, in descending order, California, Texas, Florida, Missouri and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina) received 50% of February shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 172,000 metric tons (t) in February 2022, a 16% increase from those in February 2021. Shipments for the year through February totaled an estimated 346,000 t, an increase of 6.1% from those for the prior-year period. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in February 2022 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 69% of February shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.1 Mt in February 2022, a 19% increase from production in February 2021. Production for the year through February totaled an estimated 10.8 Mt, an increase of 9.0% from the same period in 2021. The leading clinker- producing states in February 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, Florida, California and Michigan; these states accounted for 49% of February clinker production.
