March Cement Shipments Up 3.3%

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in March 2022 were an estimated 9.3 million metric tons (Mt), a 3.3% increase from shipments in March 2021, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 22.7 Mt, an increase of 6.0% from those for the same period in 2021. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in March 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement- consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Arizona and Georgia) received 45% of March shipments. 

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 228,000 metric tons (t) in March 2022, a 2.7% increase from those in March 2021. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 574,000 t, an increase of 4.7% from those for the same period in 2021. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in March 2022 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, California and Georgia; these states received 65% of March shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.9 Mt in March 2022, a 4.4% increase from production in March 2021. Production for the year through March totaled an estimated 16.5 Mt, an increase of 5.4% from the same period in 2021. The leading clinker- producing states in March 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Alabama.
