Cement Shipments Increase in 2022 

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2022 were an estimated 7.3 million metric tons (Mt), an 8.9% decrease from shipments in December 2021, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year totaled an estimated 110 Mt, a slight increase from those in 2021. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in December 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Michigan; these states accounted for 42.5% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Illinois and Georgia, in descending order) received 42.9% of December shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 172,000 metric tons in December 2022, a 10.4% decrease from those in December 2021. Shipments for the year through December totaled an estimated 2.5 Mt, an increase of 3.8% from those for the same period in 2021. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in December 2022 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee; these states received 62.7% of December shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.6 Mt in December 2022, a 6.6% decrease from production in December 2021. Production for the year through December totaled an estimated 79.6 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same time period in 2021. The leading clinker-producing states in December 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 49.2% of December clinker production.
