March Cement Shipments Drop 6%

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in March 2023 were an estimated 8.7 million metric tons (Mt), a 6.0% decrease from shipments in March 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in March 2023, 3.2 Mt (96%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). 

Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 22.1 Mt, a 2.7% decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in March 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, Florida, California and Alabama. 

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Georgia and Arizona, in descending order) received 42.5% of March shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 226,000 metric tons (t) in March 2023, essentially unchanged from those in March 2022. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 591,000 t, an increase of 4.6% from those for the same period in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in March were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and California; these states received 62.6% of March shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.5 Mt in March, a 7.8% decrease from production in March 2022. Production for the year through March totaled an estimated 15.9 Mt, a decrease of 3.7% from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states in March were, in descending order, Texas, California, Florida, Alabama and Missouri.
