Cement Shipments Grow in May

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2023 were an estimated 10.1 million metric tons (Mt), a 4.3% increase from shipments in May 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in May, 4.1 Mt (96%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). 

Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 40.5 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Michigan and Florida; these states accounted for 40.1% of cement produced in May. 

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio, in descending order) received 38.2% of May shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 216,000 metric tons (t) in May 2023, a slight decrease from those in May 2022. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 993,000 t, unchanged from those for the same period in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in May were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee; these states received 62.3% of May shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 7.3 Mt in May 2023, a 4.3% increase from production in May 2022. Production for the year through May totaled an estimated 29.5 Mt, a slight decrease from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama.
