Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in February were an estimated 7.59 million metric tons (Mt), a 10.3% increase from revised shipments in February 2023, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Report.
Shipments for the year through February totaled an estimated 13.5 Mt, a slight decrease from those revised for the same period in 2023. Of total blended tonnage reported in 2024 year-to-date, 6.83 Mt (98%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in February were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Georgia and Arizona, in descending order) received 47.1% of February shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 179,000 metric tons (t) in February, unchanged from those in February 2023. Shipments for the year through February totaled an estimated 343,000 t, a decrease of 5.5% from those for the same period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in February were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and California; these states received 64.1% of the month’s shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.04 Mt in February, a 4.3% increase from production in February 2023. Production for the year through February totaled an estimated 9.85 Mt, a 9.3% decrease from the same period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing states during the month were, in descending order, California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
