Cement Shipments Up 7.3% in August

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2022 were an estimated 10.9 million metric tons (Mt), a 7.3% increase from shipments in August 2021, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 72.9 Mt, an increase of 3.9% from those for the same period in 2021. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 37.2% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio, in descending order) received 36.6% of August shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 253,000 metric tons in August 2022, a 19.6% increase from those in August 2021. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 1.7 Mt, an increase of 7.8% from those for the same period in 2021. The leading masonry-cement- consuming states in August 2022 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 61.6% of August shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 7.2 Mt in August 2022, essentially unchanged from production in August 2021. Production for the year through August totaled an estimated 51.6 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same time period in 2021. The leading clinker-producing states in August 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida, and Alabama.
