Cement Shipments Steady in January

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in January 2023 were an estimated 6.6 million metric tons (Mt), essentially unchanged from shipments in January 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported, 2.1 Mt (95%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in January 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Florida, California, Missouri and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Georgiaand Arizona, in descending order) received 46.7% of January shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 188,000 metric tons in January 2023, a 7.6% increase from those in January 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in January 2023 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and California; these states received 64.9% of January shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.6 Mt in January 2023, a slight decrease from production in January 2022. The leading clinker-producing states in January 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, Florida, California and Pennsylvania; these states accounted for 49.0% of January clinker production.
