June Cement Shipments Down

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in June 2023 were an estimated 10.5 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decrease from shipments in June 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in June 2023, 4.7 Mt (95%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL).

Shipments for the year through June totaled an estimated 51.0 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in June 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Michigan and Florida; these states accounted for 39.5% of cement produced.

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received 37.3% of June shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 215,000 metric tons in June 2023, a 7.5% decrease from those in June 2022. Shipments for the year through June totaled an estimated 1.2 Mt, essentially unchanged from those for the same period in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in June 2023 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 59.7% of June shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.3 Mt in June 2023, an 8.3% decrease from production in June 2022. Production for the year through June totaled an estimated 35.8 Mt, a 3.2% decrease from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states in June 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
