Cement Shipments Continue Slight Decline

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in July 2023 were an estimated 9.3 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decrease from shipments in July 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in July 2023, 4.9 Mt (98%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). 

Shipments for the year through July totaled an estimated 60.4 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in July 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida, and Michigan; these states accounted for 39.4% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio, in descending order) received 38.4% of July shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 190,000 metric tons in July 2023, a 10.4% decrease from those in July 2022. Shipments for the year through July totaled an estimated 1.4 Mt, a 2.8% decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in July 2023 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, CaliforniaGeorgia and Tennessee; these states received 60.7% of July shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.8 Mt in July 2023, a 5.8% decrease from production in July 2022. Production for the year through July totaled an estimated 42.7 Mt, a 3.6% decrease from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states in July 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
