Cement Shipments Drop 5.3% in April

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in April 2022 were an estimated 9.2 million metric tons (Mt), a 5.3% decrease from shipments in April 2021, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through April totaled an estimated 31.9 Mt, an increase of 2.4% from those for the same period in 2021. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in April 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia) received 41% of April shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 217,000 metric tons (t) in April 2022, a slight decrease from those in April 2021. Shipments for the year through April totaled an estimated 791,000 t, an increase of 3.1% from those for the same period in 2021. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in April 2022 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, California and Georgia; these states received 62% of April shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.7 Mt in April 2022, essentially unchanged from production in April 2021. Production for the year through April totaled an estimated 23.1 Mt, an increase of 3.8% from the same period in 2021. The leading clinker-producing states in April 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Pennsylvania; these states accounted for 50% of April clinker production.
